Tacos
4 servings
Ingredients
- Shells
- 1 lb ground beef
- Taco seasoning
- Cheddar cheese
- Lettuce
- Tomato
- Sour cream
- Salsa (optional)
Equipment
- Large frying pan
- Spatula
- Grater
- Chopping board and knife
- Three small bowls
- Measuring cup
- Empty jar or tin for the grease
Preparation
- Take the ground beef out to thaw.
A couple of hours at room temperature. Still cold is fine; frozen solid steams instead of browning.
- Read the seasoning packet and find how much water it asks for.
Usually half to three quarters of a cup, but it varies by brand.
- Measure that much water and leave it by the stove.
- Grate the cheese into a bowl.
- Chop the lettuce into a second bowl.
- Dice the tomato into a third bowl.
- Put the shells, sour cream, and salsa on the table.
Method
- Put the pan on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high.
- Put the ground beef in the pan.
- Break the beef apart with the spatula as it cooks.
Small crumbs, not lumps.
- Cook until no pink is left in the meat.
Cut a bigger piece open to check the middle. Around 7 to 10 minutes.
- Pour the measured water into the pan.
- Tip the seasoning into the pan and stir until it coats all the meat.
- Let the liquid bubble until it has cooked off.
Watery to a thick sauce clinging to the meat, about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat.
- Spoon the grease out of the pan and into the empty jar.
There is usually a lot, and the tacos are better without it.
- Let the grease cool in the jar, then put the jar in the bin.
Do not dump grease into the sink, it's bad for your pipes.
- Tip the beef into a serving bowl and put it on the table.
- Build a taco: shell first, then beef, then whichever toppings you want.
- Enjoy.
